Outside the brain may just appear to be a handful of pink and gray muscle, however, as you enter the human brain, it unveils an extremely complex circuit, connecting you with the rest of your body, the brain contains almost 100,00 miles of blood vessels and billions of cells. The brain is a library of information, remembering information and processing it as quick as 11 million bits per second (The Human Brain). The brain is a very copious system made of four lobes which dictate emotions, thoughts, skills and actions. Crisis management team A crisis management team is basically placed in an organization for protecting the organization from the negative implications of any sort of crisis occur in an organization as well as the crisis management team also prepare and make the organization ready for any kind of contingencies and inevitable threats. In the Mining Co. also there are few issues taking place which requires a crisis management team to handle and resolve them. One such issue is talent gap, it is analyzed that the candidates are not appropriately suitable for the job as they are lack of the specific knowledge needed for the post as well there is shortage of talent in the industry. The companies are also not able to retain the talent staff for a longer period and thus there is shortage of talent. And to control this issue there is a need that there must be a crisis management team (Booth, 2015). Selection Criteria For selecting an effective and appropriate crisis management team the criteria would be that the candidates or the members will be selected upon their experience, logical reasoning, conflict solving techniques and approaches and an individual with optimistic approach and successful leadership qualities. The members must be effective in communication, fast in making decisions and also have a practical approach while making actions and taking decisions (Waller and Pratten, 2014). Format and Structure The format and the structure of the crisis management team will be that there will be a chief leader who will be responsible for taking final decisions as well there will be 5 supportive members who will be the team member which will assist the leader in taking correct and effective decisions. The work will be distributed among all the team members equally. While taking the final decision, there viewpoints will be considered and the best and suitable decision would be implemented. Functioning The functioning of the crisis management team is as follows: Firstly there is an appointment of a team leader who is authorized to have the complete charge of the situation and the leader motivates the staff to perform as a single unit. After that there is understanding of the primary regions of concern at the time of emergency circumstances. The next step is that the team will work over the problem of talent gap and will try to know the various reasons which are the cause behind the occurrence of the issue. After that plans are developed for improving the situation i.e. how to fill this talent gap and to overcome the issue. The issue is discussed in an open forum so that the different viewpoints and opinions can be encountered and the best possible plan can be implement (Coombs, 2014). To fill the talent gap there are plans life training and development of the existing talent groups so that they can preferably fill the gap and can also assist other employees to have developed skills and knowledge so that they can be have the matched and suitable work skills for the required job role. The crisis management team will also develop various effective recruitment and selection techniques so that the best and most suitable candidates can be approached for the work. There can be development of various plans and strategies which can help in reducing the talent gap and increasing the appointment of talented workforce (Johansen, Aggerholm and Frandsen, 2012). Rewarding Program The crisis management team must be rewarded for performing well and eliminating the substantial talent gap from the company. There are various reward programs which will motivate the team to work hard and in an effective manner and to have better and improved results (Aguinis, Joo and Gottfredson, 2013). Following are few of those rewarding programs: Variable Pay The variable pay is one form of the reward program in which the team members will get variable pays as per their performance and work. In Case two, where the company has a major issue where the senior executives want to leave the company because of the economic crisis as well as the terrifying impact of ISIS, it is necessary for the Mining Co. to implement various strategies and plans which can reduce the impact and can boost the morale of the employees so that they can work peacefully. In Case three, there is an issue which arises in the company related to substantial talent gap and it is one of the major issues which is currently prevailing all over the world. And to overcome such issue the company is introducing a crisis managemen t team in the company so that the issue can be resolved and there can be potential and skilled talent workforce in the company. Recommendations There are few recommendations which can be provide to the Mining Co. for the better business operations and improved retaining of the employees. The company should have a continuous improvement plan so that the existing workforce can be developed and retained in the company and the talent gap can be reduced. The company should also have a governmental support in order to reduce the contingencies and threats of ISIS and the economic crisis. In the present scenarios to retain the talent in the company it is required that the company should focus on improving the employee benefit program and also develop various strategies to have provide the employees a safer and secure place to work. The company should also have an adequate and set structure for selection of the members of crisis management team as they are required to be effective and latent enough to recognize the issue and resolve it efficiently. When Ellie Andrews decided to escape away from his father, she changed the course of her personal history. Because of her rebellion to her father, she was able to see the world that is different from her affluent upbringing, more so, she was able to meet the person whose character makes her fall in love. There were also instances when she hesitated Warne’s offers during their journey, but her final decision to accept those pleasantries, such as an overnight stay and a breakfast, somehow gave her good results. Peter Warne had also made an abrupt but necessary decision when two detectives sought for Andrews by acting as if they were a couple fighting. Both of them were able to escape from the detectives. During an encounter in their rented room, Andrews got emotional and professed her love to Warne, but Warne decided to stay mum, but he knew he loves her. The following morning, he decided to marry her, but sold his written story to his boss in a publication and hurried home before she wakes up. He got the money, but he loses his love, Ellie Andrews, when she phoned her father about her whereabouts. However, Andrew’s last-minute decision to back-out from a supposed wedding with the gold-digger made her ba ck in the arms of her real love, Peter Warne. 3) What three or four sequences are most important in the film? Why? First was when Ellie escaped away from his father. Because of that, she met Peter Warne and accidentally fell in love with him during their journey. Next was when Warne offered her a breakfast that made Ellie appreciated his efforts. That scene paved way for more funny but romantic scenes between the two. Next, when Ellie emotionally confronted Warne about her blossoming feelings for him, it made him want to marry her. When he left the following morning to secure money for his proposal and wedding to Ellie, that made the whole situation incomprehensible for Ellie that is why she decided to call her father because she thinks he left her. In the part of Warne, seeing Ellie rode in a car with his father also made the situation complicated. Lastly, when Ellie decided to back out on the day of her wedding after her father’s persuasion that Warne is a good person, she made the right decision by ending up with Warne. 4) Did the ?lm surprise you with anything unusual in its story, style, technique, or implications? Abstract: Social loafing according to Latanà © et al (1979) is the decrease in personal effort that occurs when an individual works within a group. However, when people feel as though their input is identifiable they are motivated to exert more effort, thereby mitigating social loafing. (Harkins Jackson, 1985) In an attempt to discover if this effect could be replicated, an opportunity sample of 52 participants was recruited to partake in an independent measures experiment. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups, the public group or the private group. Both groups were asked, via email, to provide suggestions on how their town centre could be improved. The â€Å"public† group believed their results would be attributed to them publicly whilst the â€Å"private† group were assured anonymity. It was hypothesized that the public group would provide more suggestions than the private group. The â€Å"private† condition resulted in a lower mean number of respon ses (M 3.8, SD 2.6) than the â€Å"public† condition (M 6.8, SD 2.22) which supported the hypothesis. Introduction: Social loafing is the propensity for group members to come to be less productive as the group size increases (Latanà © et al, 1979). This effect reveals the converse relationship that exists between group size and an individual’s input to the accomplishment of a task. While examining the association between performance effectiveness and group productivity, Ringelmann (1913) discovered that having members of a group work collectively (in this case, pulling a rope) actually resulted in considerably less effort being applied than when the individual carried out the task independently. Ringelmann also revealed that as more individuals join a group, the group frequently grows progressively inefficient; rejecting the premise that group effort reliably leads to increased productivity. He suggested that groups fail to maximise their potential as several interpersonal processes diminish the group’s overall ability. Williams, Harkins and Latanà ©, (1981) attributed two distinct processes as potential sources for the reduced productivity within groups: motivation loss, and coordination issues. However, group members largely believe that they are contributing to their full potential when asked; evidence has indicated that individuals exhibit loafing without realising (Karau Williams, 1993). In order to facilitate a reduction in social loafing, several suggestions forwarded. Kerr Bruun (1983) state that individuals who exhibit social loafing often fail to contribute as they believe other group members will compensate for them. Therefore, each member of a group should be made to feel like they are vital to the completion of the task at hand. By increasing the individual’s perceived importance of their part of the group, members tend to expend more effort towards achieving the required outcomes. Harkins Szymanski (1989) assert that groups that establish explicit goals tend to outperform groups with unclear objectives. Setting clearly defined aims is believed to encourage many production-enhancing processes, such as increased commitment, comprehensive planning and quality monitoring of group tasks, and increased effort (Weldon, Jehn, Pradhan, 1991). Similar results can be achieved by decreasing the group size; as group size reduces, each members role in the group becomes increasingly integral, so the opportunity to loaf is reduced. Finally, and the focus of this study, when people feel as though their individual contribution is identifiable, they become motivated to work harder on a group project (Harkins Jackson, 1985). This is due to the individual experiencing evaluation apprehension, thereby increasing productivity through social facilitation. Social facilitation is an improvement in performance produced by the presence of others, as in the â€Å"audience effect† as demonstrated by Dashiell (1935), However, should a project allow individual members to remain anonymous, they feel less anxiety about being judged by others, resulting in social loafing (Harkins Petty,1982). The research hypothesis for this study is: Participants in the public group will provide more suggestions than participants in the private group. Method: Design: An Independent measures experimental design with two groups was employed. The independent variable, attribution of comments, was manipulated so that one group was informed that their comments would be publicly attributed to them while the other group was informed that they would remain anonymous. The dependent variable was the total number of responses. Participants: 52 Participants from the experimenter’s friends, family and workplace were asked via email to participate. Participants were assigned, on an alternate basis, to either the â€Å"public† or â€Å"private† condition. The number of participants in each condition was equal. Materials: Standard (2013) desktop PC running Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 2010 was used for all email correspondence, data collation. Ethical consent form obtained from a university representative prior to experiment. (See Appendix A). Participant debrief form (See Appendix F). Procedure: Each participant in the first instance was contacted via email to ask if they wished to take part in a research experiment. Participants who agreed were randomly assigned to one of two groups, the â€Å"public† group or the â€Å"private† group, by means of order of response. For example the first participant to agree to take part was allocated to the â€Å"public† group, the second to â€Å"private† and alternated thusly until all participants had been assigned a group. Each was then sent, via email, an instruction form relating to their group and a consent form to complete. Each participant was asked to follow the instructions provided and return both the consent form and their responses by email within 48 hours. Once the responses were received the debrief sheet was sent out to inform the participant of the true nature of the experiment and advise them that they could remove their data and consent should they wish to. As no consent was withdrawn all dat a gathered was utilised. The total number of responses for each participant was counted and recorded under the appropriate group heading on the response collation form for statistical analysis. Results: The results from the two groups were collected and collated into a table of raw data (See Appendix G). Summary statistics are provided in Table 1 and the mean values are displayed in Figure 1. An independent-samples t-test was conducted to compare the number of responses in â€Å"public† and â€Å"private† conditions (See Appendix H). There was a significant difference in the scores for the â€Å"public† (M=6.8, SD= 2.2) and the â€Å"private† (M=3.8, SD=2.6) conditions; t (50) =4.52, p= Figure 1. Discussion: The results generated in this study support Harkins and Jackson’s (1985) assertion that identification increases group productivity in that the â€Å"public† group provided a significantly higher â€Å"response† mean. It also suggests Ringelmann’s (1913) observations and Latanà © et al’s (1979) â€Å"social loafing† may occur even when group members are not physically part of a group. A possible issue of using an independent measures design for this type of research is the potential for error arising from individual differences between participants, for example it may have been that those selected for the â€Å"public† group may have been, in general, more civically minded with a greater personal investment in their home town. As a result the â€Å"public† group might return more responses, not as a result of the independent variable being altered but of the individual differences in participants. To mitigate this effect more information would need to be gleaned from participants to ensure equal distributions between groups. Social loafing and social facilitation, in general, are viewed as distinct lines of research in social psychological literature. It appears, however, that these two phenomena may be closely related as the latter appears to mitigate the former. Further research into the extent to which they interact would be useful in uncovering the depth of the relationship. The aim of the experiment was to compare the amount of suggestions provided by each group. It was anticipated that the public group would provide more suggestions as they believed they would be identified and as such would not want to appear to be putting the overall performance of the group down, the private group were expected to provide less suggestions as they were not to be identifiable and it would not be known if they provided only one suggestion for the group, and therefore more prone to ‘social loafing’. The data has now been collated and we did indeed find that the public group provided more suggestions than the private group. These findings along with a report will be written and submitted to the University of Highlands and Islands as part of an assessment carried out by 3rd year Psychology Degree students.
